Guy Standing’s arguments for a universal basic income (UBI) as a way of protecting The Precariat

The Great Transition Network recently hosted a great discussion of Guy Standing’s arguments for a universal basic income (UBI) as a way of protecting The Precariat–the many workers of the global economy without access to secure employment.

As I indicated in my very short contribution, I would be more enthusiastic about UBI if its advocates would get more specific about how, exactly, unpaid care givers would be affected. I presume that young children and other dependents would get a UBI to help pay for their care, but how, exactly, would this stipend be distributed?

For instance, would mothers and fathers of young children get an equal share of their children’s allowance whether or not they shared care responsibilities? Just asking… I would be SO interested in comments/reactions to this point.
